....stupid used sub....
As I said in another thread, I was pushing my system a little last night while driving through UConn's campus during a crazy party weekend. Well, this morning I noticed a nasty rattle coming from trunk that isn't there normally. Well, I looked at the sub, and thought the plastic cover glued to the cone looked a little loose. I touched it, and IT FELL OFF. Now I can look into the center of the sub, and I'm wondering if it's bad to run it without that plastic cover. Should I bother trying to glue it back on, or just leave it until I get a new sub sometime this summer? I may sell both my amp and sub and go for some decent stuff. Gotta love tax returns .
Here's a pic showing the sub before it fell apart:

Re: ....stupid used sub....
I'm seriously thinking about it. You didn't answer whether or not I can run it without the dust cap, though. I'm watching ebay like a hawk. Anyone here have a decent 15" sub you don't need anymore? Like a RE Se or something.

Re: ....stupid used sub....
a dust cap is there for a reason, to keep crap out of the coil former. with out one something may get down in there and screw up your coil. also, itcompletes the cone. unless it is a cone that didnt need a dust cap in the first place you need a dust cap. so basically if it has a hole where the dust cap was, glue it back on and sell the woofer. if there is no hole and it was there for show you dont need it but it will hcange the T/S params slightly because you are removing mass from the cone.
how much are you willing to spend on a woofer? SE's arent that expensive...

Re: ....stupid used sub....
OK, what types of glue are ok to use? I've heard that silicone based glues have nasty fumes that hurt the foam surround. I suppose I could just hot glue it, but that probably wouldn't hold for too long.
I'm thinking like $125 or so... What do good amps go for?

Re: ....stupid used sub....
Partsexpress.com....they have speaker glue. otherwise i would use epoxy.
for $125 you likely could get a used SE 15. is that 125 indepenant from the money you may make by selling your current woofer? sell that woofer to some suka` for way morethan what it is worth, or E-bay it if you are looking to upgrade....

Heh, I was the sucka that bought it from some other sucka... I wonder if I can sell it again
Would contact cement work? I remember a while ago that people use contact cement for repairing surrounds, so I figure it would be ok for them.

Re: ....stupid used sub....
well even silicone based glues wont hurt the surrond if it is in a vnetelated area. rubber cement should work, how well i dont know.

Re: ....stupid used sub....
Ouch, that sucks Germany... I just glued my dust cap back on with some heavy duty contact cement, and I'm going to see about selling it locally before going to ebay.
I'm seriously debating between an Atlas 15 and a RE SE 15. I haven't gotten an email from RE yet, so I don't know what an SE goes for, but the Atlas is $160 shipped, plus it has the XBL^2 tech. Any big differences between those or other subs in that price range?

Re: ....stupid used sub....
Yep, that's what fell off. It's glued back on now, way better than it was before.
There are 3 ways to get RE stuff: Direct, by calling them; Through a dealer, if one's near you; Used, from a friend or on eBay.
Here's the Atlas. Pretty good for the money, but an SE is only a few bucks more, and people are telling me that it's gonna sound better. NGSM13 got quoted $185 shipped to Ohio for one.

Re: ....stupid used sub....
Glad to see you got it glued back on. Actually, a dust cover does something more important than keeping dust and crap out. What it does is move air through the motor structure. So, when you are jamming, the sub creates heat, therefore the dust cap helps move air through the motor structure.

Re: ....stupid used sub....
If you're aiming for that, go for XXXs... a single 18" would be plenty, just ask CBFryman. That's his goal I think, and he's got a smaller space than you do to put it in. Just remember that it's not just going to be the cost of the sub, the amp is gonna be 300 - 500, and you're gonna need a new alternator. You should probably do the "big 3" upgrade too (replacing all the wiring in the engine compartement with 0/1 gauge wire). A new battery or two would be a good idea too. All those expensive upgrades is why I'm happy with just having a single sub taking less than 500 watts.
