amp advice

Hey all, I'm havin troubles with my nine.1 amp and would like some input as I won't be able to get to it until around Friday...here's how it's setup:

I originally had it running an eD 12O.44 (wired to 2 ohms) since like november, december I think. I set the gain at a tad above a quarter, and it sounded great, no problems. A few weeks ago, I got a 16Ov2 (wired to 2 ohms) I set the gain to less than a quarter and threw it in a 2.25ft^3 ported to 30 hz. While driving yesterday it went into protect with no funky sounds or smells, so I figured something had popped loose. I checked wires/fuses/etc. and everything was ok. I turned the car back on and it plays for 10 maybe 20 seconds, and goes back into protection. Rinse and repeat countless times. I've checked and rechecked connections and fuses and it looks good, and I'm fearing that there's a problem with the amp, but I won't be for sure until I can hook my old one up on Friday in the same setup. I don't see how it could have blown as it's been running the same way perfectly for about 5-6 months now, and I've recently turned it down. I'd just like to get some input before I tear it all apart Friday...thanks guys, sorry for long read.

Re: amp advice

im not really sure why that happens. i had the same problem with a punch 6002 amp. after running it for a while (or i should say abusing it for a while) it would cut out for a few seconds and come back on.

I'm guessing thats what I have to do, but I really don't want to wait. My 16O needs some more playtime, and I just got a port and everything :-( Oh well.

And it doesn't cut out for a few seconds and come back on, it turns for a few seconds then goes into protect until I turn it off for a while.

Maybe a voltage problem?! What's you electrical system like...sound like a voltage drop...

Re: amp advice

I don't think its a voltage drop as it never turns back on until I shut the car off, let it sit for a while, then turn it back on. Today I should be able to swap amps and see if thats the problem...

Re: amp advice

maybe the power turn off does something when you turn the car off, it could still be voltage drop then, couldn't it?

sounds more like a low impedance problem ..... you may have a stray wire crossing over at the amp speaker terminals, or a blown sub, or they are wired at too low an impedance - or the amp is just bad.

Re: amp advice

Why not meter it all out instead of guessing?

Re: amp advice

I think I got it figured out, its not low impedence (2ohms & its 1ohm stable) or anything...I took everything out and rewired it all, and then set it all back up. As long as I don't go anywhere, it plays fine. But as soon as the amp moves a gets bumped or anything, it cuts out, no matter what I have hooked up to it. I don't really want to send it back as I'm lacking in the money department, but I guess I have to, huh?

Sounds like it. The problems I've heard on these amps is that they can't take too much abuse on the RCA inputs. If you have pushed on them too hard or something, it causes the solder to break loose or worse, cracks the board.

Ahh, the rca's didn't have much slack to 'em I bet thats the problem. Thanks poncho!
