oil filter

I know this is a stupid question but any one have any tricks to getting off an oil filter that it as tight as *&$%? I dont know how it got so tight but my oil filter wrench that i began with stripped on me, and then i have the type thats like the claw and it pretty much demolished to bottom on it and now there are holes in it. And to top it off its on my truck with a 454 in it so i have no space underneath to get good leverage or a big tool under there.

thanx
david

Re: oil filter

Use a hammer and a sharp chisel. Place the chisel right at the base of the filter where it meets the block and tap gently. The idea is to tap it so it will force the filter to unscrew. Tap it in several places around the filter if you can. You can whack it pretty hard, so long as you do not touch the block.

For the next filter, put a film of clean oil on the rubber gasket before installation.

Re: oil filter

-stab a screwdriver through it and turn the screwdriver

-get a new oil filter wrench

-those rubber kitchen grip things

-on your new one, put oil on the rubber gasket as said above and only tighten 3/4 turn after hand tight. Don't use a wrench to put it on.

Re: oil filter

Next time, use a 'cup type' wrench where you use a metal bowl that looks a bit like an ash tray that fits snugly over the bottom of the filter and is turned by a 3/8 inch ratchet drive.

Yeah, the screwdriver stab works pretty well!

Re: oil filter

I stab the bottom with two screwdrivers, one on each side, then cross the shanks in an X and use the handles to turn it off.
