10" subs re-cone

Where can I find a re-cone kit for 2 10 inch subs for cheap?

Has anybody here ever reconed speakers before?

What is the proper way to recone them?

Thanks,
Matt

I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to sound systems. I've fried three now. Perhaps I shouldn't play cd's throught the tape adapter anymore...or stop 'upgrading' with parts from a scrap yard.

Tis true, you'd have to contact the manufacturer. If it is a mainstream/major manufacturer...it's NOT gonna happen...you'll have to send them in to get repaired and pay a pretty penny

Re: 10" subs re-cone

They are Advent speakers. Date on the back reads-don't laugh-1979. They are old, but before the the foam surrounds crumbled they were better than a lot of the new speakers I've heard out there. Actually, the cones are fine, just the surrounds are broken. Is there a way that I could replace just the surrounds? I don't see why they wouldn't make a universal fit surround. If not, I can make one myself, but I would need to know what is the easiest material to do this with.

actually, there are "universal" surround replacement kits. A kit for 2 costs like $25, I did my old JBL's like that - it actually works really good.

Re: 10" subs re-cone

just replacing the surround, yes that is possible, like Paul said, just takes a preformed surround and some speaker parts glue. however different stifness will change T/S params (even though i dont think they even had theile small params back then, did they? i mean i know the actual things existed but i cant remember when they where standerdised but Theile and Small...hell i dont know their first names)
slightly and consequintly how int interacts with the enclsore and how they will sound, but it will only be slightly so its nothing to worry about really.

FYI Buick: the reason there arent universal recone kits is because there are so many variables such as the actual size of the cone, stifness of the spider, material of the spider, size of the spider, number of spiders, coil diameter, windings on the coil, coil length, the variety of motor designs (over hung, under hung etc..), the resistance of the coils, the length of the tinsile leads....and that is just to name a few.

so some speaks from '79...hell that is back when my dad was just joining the military and had an intrest in loud stereo's....he was also buying his first new vehicle, '78 datsun...lol

Re: 10" subs re-cone

Heh, I once found a blown home stereo subwoofer sitting next to a dumpster. The speaker was blown, so I'm guessing some idiot saw the whole thing to be trash. Well I brought that sucker home, duck taped it back together and man did it rock. I wasn't expecting it to even work since it had sat out in the rain the night before I found it. It was pretty sweet.

Id like to know what you ducttaped back togather... no ducttape will not work as a surround, im not sure on where to get a surround kit online, but partsexpress.com may have some.

Re: 10" subs re-cone

Well, I did in fact use it as a surround. I wasn't expecting for it to actually work, nor was I expecting any type of performance to come from it. I merely did it out of boredom.

actually, duct tape would work, just not very well and not very dependable.

I will look up where I got mine when I get home ... if I think about it.
