I need a good street racer for under 6 grand
Hey all, Im lookin to get a nice street racer i could upgrade. I don't know much about cars, but im lookin for some info. I need to know what kind of car i should start out with that will blow all the other cars at my highschool out of the water. Please give me some ideas. P.S. it needs to be under $6,000

For six grand you could probably buy a boosted import easily off the street. (well at least around my area you can) How fast exactly do you want to go? What kind of cars do you have at your school? Letting us know what your up against at school would help. Late.

You could get a very gently used CRX for 2grand and then spend 4 grand on motor swap + tranny.

There should be a poll option that says "I puke on these poll options", i'd agree with skyline, MKIII Supra Turbo should do the job for under 6k, that way you'd be faster AND people might have some respect for your car.

this kid isn't even 16 yet. I think he should worry about learning to drive before he worries about street racing.

Re: I need a good street racer for under 6 grand.
5.0 Mustang would probably be your best bet. Turbo Mopars work too. If you're really lucky, you might find a decent Buick Grand National for six grand.

hey drdisque, i believe he asked for input on a good street car, not your input on his age, but yeah i'd go with the 5.0, u could find one for 1500-2000, get some flowmasters, headers, intake, 3.73 gears, gt 40 heads, some rims & rubber, cams, etc;

He still makes a good point, I'm 16 and have given myself a year of driving (17 next month) before going for a car that would even compete with the automobiles at my school much less 'blow them out of the water'
Anyway, any old beater import has good potential. Since they sell for pretty cheap you can buy an old import for $2,000-$4,000 and spend the rest on the engine and everything else required to fix it up right.
Examples
-First Generation Eclipse/Talon/Laser turbo model
-Old civic hatch (add motor swap and/or turbo kit + internals)
-89-94 240sx (add motor swap or turbo kit + internals)
-first gen 300zx turbo
-mkIII supra turbo
-older rx-7 turbo
As for domestics I know the 5.0's can be made fast for pennies and I think the Ford probe GT is quick for what it is, not sure how much it would cost to beef it up but a guy on here named turbo2nr had one for a while and had some fairly impressive kills with it.

good info ... I'd look at a 1g or 2g turbo eclipse/talon or as kman10587 says a 5.0 stang and some good mods would be your best bet.

Re: I need a good street racer for under 6 grand.
I didn't even think of the 1st gen. turbo DSM; those rival the 5.0 Mustang for cheap speed. The drivetrain isn't as durable, though, and super AWD launches = lots of stress on the tranny, so be warned.

Re: I need a good street racer for under 6 grand.
I just want to offer a little advice I wish someone would have given me when I was younger it would have saved me money. Most importantly, get a car you love. When you go looking as a young guy your first instincts tell you get the fastest car you can so you can impress your friends. Well when you are 4,000$ in debt, your friends are no longer impressed, and you regret buying that car it sucks. Yeah of course you want something fast and badass, but most importantly buy something you can live with for a few years too. With that said I like the idea of a 1st gen DSM also.

Get a 5.0 Mustang as what several people have already said. Their after market is second to none with a whole lot of options.

Re: I need a good street racer for under 6 grand.
Get a 5.0l mustang, or if you want to be different get a 93-95 Lightning, not much slower then a GT from the same years...Another idea is a 97-03 GP GTP, chip, pulley, cat-back, and CAI and you'd be cruising.
