are my 6x9's clipping?

Hi all. Ok, I know the basic principles of sound clipping. I was just wondering if there was any way to tell if they are in fact clipping without an o-scope. I have a digital mulitmeter however. The thing is, I have a pioneer head, thats powering my front speakers. And I installed an old skool Pioneer amp (gm-h50 to be exact), and I have that powering 2 pioneer 6x9's which are rated at 50W rms and 330W peak each, I believe. They do sound very very good. when at like, oh say about 20 volume, which the head goes to 60. When in 30's and 40's, they have distorted highs, and the lows dont hit as well anymore. These suckers really pound at lower volume. They sound almost like subs. I have no idea what the specs are on the amp. I am assuming about 25W x2 RMS, does that sound right. Thats what I wanted to know, if maybe I am underpowering my speakers, and I have heard that underpowering is sometimes worse than overpowering. btw, the speakers are Pioneer Ts-A940P 6x9's, the head is a pioneer deh-p6500, and the amp is a Pioneer Gm-h50. If that would tell you anything. What should I do, the gain isn't all the way up, they sound really bad when it is. If you guys could help me out on the amp specs, that would be great also, it doesnt indicate these anywhere. Thankyou.

I couldn't find where anyone was selling it .... by the number, I would assume the amp is either 25 or 50 watt/ch RMS. Just remember that speakers only put out so much voulme, you might be expecting too much. Also, if they are free air and you are using them as woofers they may tend to pop if you have no low end filter on them.

Re: are my 6x9's clipping?

no, they dont pop. Maybe they arent getting enough power? I dont know. Another question... On the amp, the gain is from 2volts to 200millevolts. Right now, my fade is at 0, I'm getting all the same volume from all four speakers. And I have the gain on the amp set towerds the 200mV side. I know my HU has 4V preouts. Should I crank the amp down to the lowest, 2V, and then use the fade on the Head to even it out? Or should I just leave well enough alone? The amp has never overheated, and doesnt get that hot, even when I have the volume up for long drives. Any ideas? Thanks Paul.

try turning the gain to halfway. The gain control is really a level matching device, not a volume control - having it up so high may be causing your clipping
