potateo in exhaust

I heard that if u put a potaeateo into an exhaust the car does not start and it does not do any damage to the engine. Is this true or would the potateo just shoot out?

Re: potateo in exhaust

Try it out on your car and find out! j/k Actually we need more questions like this.

I think if the potato was not too tight it would shoot out. If it was real tight the engine would still start but would soon quit. I never had a reason to try it so I'm not positive. Let's hear from some expert potato crammers.

BTW- What's a potaeateo? Some kind of Mexican potato?

Why do you want to know... Did you get a potato stuck in your tail pipe?

Re: potateo in exhaust

It depends on several factors, like whether or not the potato seals and stays there. Some exhausts have enough volume to hold enough air mass to let the engine start, but quickly die. At that point, either the car dies, or the potato shoots out at incredible speed breaking the ankle of whoever is near. If the potato doesn't seal, it will let the car idle, but when they try to go somewhere it will backfire and buck.

Stress to the valves, starter, and rings are the only things I can think of, so I guess an engine that is in good health probably won't suffer much, but it could do some damage.

Be careful what you say er I might roll you up in a taco and serve you at Taco Bells.

As for the old potatoe trick, if done right, it'll stall the engine after a few minutes. If you shove it up the pipe too far you'll really piss the owner off cause it's hard to get out. Just don't be standing behind it or have the tail pipe pointed at a window. If it does get blown out, it comes out with alot of force. It's like the biggest pee-shooter in the world

Re: potateo in exhaust

There is a TV show on Discovery called "Myth Busters"
They tested the potato trick on TV (as well as bananas, thanks to Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop)
and neither workd. The potato got shot out of the pipe quickly.

Back about 30 years ago, there was an anti-theft device for cars. It was a tailpipe cap held on by wing nuts. The idea is after you parked your car, you could screw the cap on the end of the pipe in seconds and immobilize the car.

I actually thought it was a fun question and was only attempting some light hearted humor. If I offended anyone I apologize. Welcome aboard v-tec.

Re: potateo in exhaust

mythbusters if fun to watch, but they don't always get things right. remember the one with the chain wrapped around the rear axle as in american giaffiti?(sp?) not only did they test a different brand of car, it had a different suspention style i do beleave.

sandblasting the PVC pipe, shooting a man out of a sewer pipe, and the bird hiting a plane are also some i object too. like i say fun to watch, but don't trust the info. a restircted exhaust will in fact cause a car not to start. if the potato doesn't fly out, the engine will not start, or even if it does, it will run worse then crap.

Re: potateo in exhaust

I wonder if the potato would shoot out if it went into the muffler and shifted so it couldn't get out. if you're gonna do this, try using some of that stuff you use to seal up edges, it might give it a better seal for a while if it doesn't get blown off. If you can, get the car up on a stand, see if you can cut open the cat, gut the inside, stick the potato (make sure it's small enough for the cat but too big to fit through the normal exhaust tubing) then weld it shut, not only will he have trouble moving his car, he'll also smell something burning and that'll really freak him/her out.
