Amp Questions and System update
Okay,
Last time I posted in here I said I was going to get 2 12" Image DymanicsID V3's. Well, I've sound deadened every sq. inch if the car, and this was the next step in my plan. I was going to try and do that in the next year or so. Then Saturday came and I went to the Phoenix Gold Friends and Family sale at their wherehouse at their headqaurters here in Portland. I saw some pretty good deals, and so I got some pretty good deals.
I picked up 2 10" Xenon DVC4 ohm subs for $65 each
I also picked up 2 12" Octane ZR DVC 2 ohm subs for $60 each.
Now, these arn't for the same car, so don't worry, LOL. I know they arn't the ID ma'x but for $60 each...I went for it, lol. Aanyways...now on the the amp question. All are Class D monoblock amps. Pay no mind to price in the links I can get them al pretty much cheaper than what they list on the site for.
I am going to runt eh Xenon 10" subs off or a Xenon X1200.1 amp most likely (stupidly passed up on it for $300 @ the sale but can get it still for $425.87).
For the 12's I have a few questions though. I have 2 amps in mind. I can get the Octane-R 15.0:1 amp (1000rms @ 14.4 @ 2 ohms) for $283.91.
I also was thinking about the MTX 801D (800 watts RMS @ 2 ohms) for $254.95.
So, for the 2 [ url=http://www.cardomain.com/item/PHOZR12D2] 12" Octane ZR DVC 2 ohm subs[/url], (ran in series, then in parrell...so...700 rms @ 2 ohms), would you recommend the Phoenix Gold Octane-R amp or the MTX Thunder 801D amp. Is one better than the other at all, more sturdy, etc? Any opions on these 2? The Octane-R 15.0:1 would lok better in the trunk (and I do show the car during the summer, so that does mater some). However, I don't want to buy a less stable amp or an inferior one becuase it matchs better. The chrome on he 801D really doesn' match any theme on the car since I hate chrome and have none on it, but if it's a better amp, so be it, I can live with it. I want to know which you feel is a better amp?
For the record, I will be properly tuning all the amps whe n I get them in the various cars eventualy with a multimeter and a 60 hz test tone to the the required voltage for the proper tuned output. The multimeter on should read 37.5 volts at the termials to pull 700 watts @ a 2 ohm load from the MTX 801D, for example ...and the Xenon should read 60 volts at the termials to pull 900 watts RMS @ 2 ohms from the X1200.1.
Anyways, so opinons on the 2 amps (which has better qaulity/build/better..etc,) the MTX 801D and Octane 15.0:1, for the 2 Octane ZR DVC 2 ohm subs ran @ 2 ohms? They are both brand new and pretty close in price...$254.95 and $283.91, so thats not a problem.
Also, the Boxes for both the 10's and the 12's are in line according to Phoenx Golds recommendations for Sound Quality set-ups.
Thanks for the help.
Someday, maybe next year's audio project, I'll get higher powered 6.5" speakers and a new higher RMS powered 4 channel amp. Right now I have an Eclipse 3640 (160 watts, 40 * 4 rms @ 13.8 volts). The speakers are mostly 60 watts rms...well...I actually have a few to choose between, the Octane ZR 6.5 components from the sale are 75 rms, the coaxles are 60 watts RMS (Intifty Referance 6002i and Octane-R coaxles from the sale for $40 are both 60 rms, which doesn't matter I guess since the amp is 40, so they will never see it, lol). Oh well, can't complain, that amp was free

Re: Amp Questions and System update
I also would go for the Pheonix Gold amp. Many people on here have poo poo'd the MTXs when others have asked, so I've come to get a negative vibe whenever they're suggested.
Another suggestion would be to get a high quality 5 channel amp that puts out a decent amount (500 - 800 watts rms) in the sub channel and has 75 - 100 watts on each other channel. Just an idea to save space in your car.

I don't want a 5 channel amp myself though I did suggest it to a neighbor becuase it better fit his needs). I am fine with a seperate amp running the mids and highs, in fact I'd prefer it. I'd prefer to match the amp to the subs and then later better match the 4 channel to the mids and highs. I show the car in car shows (HIN, TBAD, ILT, etc), so the trunk, it pretty much useless for paractical purposes anyways, and 2 amps versus one...well...you know, lol. As I said, I have a Eclispe 3640 right now for the fronts, though I'll want more power soon. Thinking about a 300watt rms (75 *4 @ 4 ohms) phoenix gold amp down the road ($165 for the 8.0:4), or I may wait till the next freids and family sale and get the Xenon 200 * 4 rms amp, it was $205 this last sale but I passed on it.
I know the MTX amp for the subs uses a 24 db/octave LP crossover (I was unable to find out if it was a butterworth or linkwirtz-reily corssover type) and the PG Octane-R uses a 18 db/octave crossover. I alos know the MTX is CEA compliant (Comsumer Electronic Association compliant, the CEA certifies the amp will put out at least the rated specs). I know that the PG Xenon amps are CEA compliant too, but I have to check into whether the Octane-R series is or not. I suppose I am leaning towareds the PG amp, but I did have a MTX 421D monoblock amp in the past (for my first subs old subs) and it was a pretty solid amp, put out a good 65 watts past it's rated rated specs @ 12.5 volts, which isn't bad... so I don't know.
Any more thoughts are appericated.

Alright, I am able to get the Phoneix Gold amps for less than I origanally thought with a full warrenty, so I am going to get the Phoneix Gold amp, and then replace my current 4 channel amp with the matching PG 4-channel also. Besides, everything will be matching then.
I've just put a 1" MDF False Floor down, so now I'm going to start building a good, nice looking box, amp rack, wrap them and lay the trunk carpeting down...etc....thanks for the input. I have to have this all done for a show in 2 weeks. I'm already going to miss the first 2 shows of the season finishing up, but I'll have it done buy the 3rd show in about 2 weeks.

a 24 dB/oct linkwitz-riley is two 12 dB/oct butterworths cascaded together.
I prefer phoenix gold myself, especially to MTX.

Hey Paul...I feel better about the Phoenix Gold now that you've recommended it! That's what I ended up getting, Pheonix Gold. I got the Octane-R amps (1000rms mono-class D and 300 rms (75*4) Octane-R amps today...I'll get the Xenon amp later n the summer and put the Xenon's in another car....or just swap it in once I get it. I figured since I'll end up with all 3 anyways @ some point, and the car is already wired for the Octane-R amps (conisidence), I'd get those now and then the Xenon amp later, and then the wiring for that @ the same time. I do kinda wish I'd gotten the Xenon amp...but oh well...maybe by winter that'll be in and these will be in another car...
Anyways, yeah...I'll try and get a pic of everything soon, all bunched togther and stuff...un-installed but still.
While I'm at it, I am looking into High Output amps, ones that are built using all new parts made for high output, not a re-packed coil...I have found 2 compaines that do this and people seem to recommend...Ohio Generator and Wrangler Preformance NW...which happens to be like 10 miles from my home. Anyways, the price is similer. Both make a "bolt on" (I know, not a true "bolt-on", I have to change the charge wire, belt, etc...but it bolts onto the locaton and takes the stock plug) high output amp for my car, highest is about 170 ampers for the blt on, bu tthats more than enough and will give me a little extra.
Does anyone have any experience or recommendations between these 2 companies? Paul, you know your stuff well...do you have any input? For the record, the Pheonix Gold Tech Dept recommended Wrangler Performace NW (both ppl I have talked to in the tech dept recommended them). MTX recommended Ohio Gen and Wrangler Performance NW (one guy in the tech dept recommended each, lol). Most of the stereo shops arund here run Wranlger Performance (makes sense, since they are located here...lol). A few other palces recommneded Ohio Gen (Kinetik, etc). Anyways, so I am really not sure who to use for that, other than the fact Wrangler is closer.
Thanks for your help guys!
I'll try to get some pics of everything this weekend.

Re: Amp Questions and System update
Phoenix Gold>MTX IMO, but don't be so quick to diss MTX's higher end amps. They are some very solid amps. I just stay away from their lower line amps and their subs.

MTX does make some good higher end stuff, I agree. Im the end, I gues Phoenix Gold is in portland here, which made a difference, plus I was already runing phoenix gold for everyhting else, LOL. MTX does make some solid higher end stuff. I'm glad to see they are stayng away from the chrome look this year with there new line of amps...I hate chrome, lol. Always have, always will. That's one of the reasons I stayed away from the 801D. I didn't want to show an amp with chrome, it would look worng on the car...and I really didn't want tot keep the sub amp out of site just for that reason.

it might be easier and cheaper on you to get the one made close by - maybe you get a direct factory discount. Are you really sure you need a bigger alternator ? might wanna try it without one first. The last thing to remember is that many HO alternators put out less than a stock alt at idle, might wanna check that out first.

They said that they use a slightly smaller pully so it puts out a little more amps @ idel than a stocker, both of those companies said that. As long as that's the truth, then they don't put out less. I really don't know how to chekc out if they lied or not, but bothsay it puts out a little more @ idel that stock.
As a result I'll need to change the belt to a little smaller one, but thats no biggie. I know for a fact I need a bigger alternator. Done the math and figuring of it. According to my figures, I need about a 130 ampre alternator (system and car requirements included), and my stocker is 80 ampres.
Since I'm having to upgrade I'll just buy the big one, the 170 ampre one. It wil give me some headroom and extra, so I'm fine with that.
I know I need to upgrade the charge wire. Wrangler says use 0/1 guage, and SPLmax and Ohio Generator said use 4 gauge..so I don't know. I suppose 0/1 gauge makes more sense, and I can't see bigger hurting.
I won't get much of a discount, other than the fact wranlger won't have to ship it, I can drive down and pick it up, so I save on shipping....plus the fact they can make it in 2 days, and ohio gen says it takes about 3-5, plus then shipping too. Other than the shipping though, costs are similer...so I'm fine with either one. I just want to get the best one, whichever it is...and if anyone had any info on this. I know both do a compete new alternator wth new all high output parts, rotors, bearing, etc..no reman parts, not just repacking the coils, etc like some cheaper companies...
