high milege oils

i bought a 1995 ford taurus gl the other day with 141,570 miles on it and it had no previous maintenance records so i had no idea when its last oil change was. this weekend i plan on replacing the ATF fluid and the oil in the car. this car is going to be my moms daily driver and she lives in northern virginia. the cars engine makes no weird noises and is completely 100% leak free. the only thing that feels wrong with it is that i guess the tranny slips im hoping switching the atf will help with that. any way i was wondering what kind of oil do you guys recommend in this ford v6 to keep it running a long time ?

Re: high milege oils

Good old fashioned Valvoline, Castrol, or other high quality oil. If it has had synthetic its whole life, you'll notice no issues whatsoever if you use a synthetic. If the previous owner didn't use synthetic, you might notice a few leaks and a little more oil consumption, but it won't cause any damage.

The high mileage oils have a different additive package designed for an old engine's parameters, like added calcium compounds for pH stability due to extra blowby. Although I rarely recommend oil additives, the one product that seems to actually do what it advertises with a minimum of risk is Restore. If you start noticing that it burns oil, a can of that might help you out, but otherwise, just stick to plain old oil.

Changing trans fluid in a trans that already has problems may make it worse.
